If the offense scores points and the defense allow none, winning football games will come pretty easy.
Dyer County made it two straight victories Friday night, shocking Huntingdon 26-0 with a good combination of offensive execution and defensive aggression.
It’s a balance DC head coach Adam Renshaw hopes to see on a consistent basis.
"We played well," he reported. "We did a good job on both sides of the football."
Huntingdon opened the season at home with a 20-13 victory over Milan. The Choctaws won their opener 27-7 over visiting Liberty.
Dyer County takes to the road this week for the first time in the young season when it makes the long trip to Selmer to face McNairy County Central. The Bobcats are unbeaten after posting a 41-7 win over Adamsville and a 21-14 triumph over Lexington.
According to Renshaw, the McNairy Central team has a lot of speed.
"The challenge will be to contain that speed and find some holes in the defense," he explained, "They may have one of the fastest defenses we see all year."
Against Huntingdon, it was the Choctaw defense that controlled the game.
According to the DC mentor, the Mustangs’ best opportunity to score came in the second half. After a turnover and some penalties helped Huntingdon move into Dyer County territory, the Big Orange defense rose to the occasion, held the guests and forced them into a punting situation.
Instead, the Mustangs faked the punt. The Choctaws weren’t fooled and responded with a solid thrust that forced a fumble. Dyer County recovered to end the Huntingdon threat.
Renshaw said good play up front was the key to the DC defensive charge. He singled out B.A. Davis, Jeff Miller, Seth Appleton, Eric McLin, Kade Messersmith and Craig Whitt for their efforts on the defensive side of the football.
Davis is a senior. Miller, Appleton, McLin, Messersmith and Whitt are all juniors.
Blake Oliver also had a big game defensively. The senior defensive back picked off two Huntingdon passes.
Davis shined on offense as well, scoring the first two touchdowns for the Choctaws. Junior quarterback Peyton Lucas hit senior receiver Erick Bernard with a 17-yard strike for the home team’s third score.
At the break, Dyer County had a 19-0 advantage.
Miller wrapped up the scoring with a short run in the closing minutes.
