A pair of neighboring communities had their sights set on a playoff showdown in the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association state quarterfinals next week.
They’ll have to make other plans.
The Dyer County Choctaws and Dyersburg Trojans, teams who finished 1 – 2 in the Region 7-3A regular-season standings, were upset in second-round competition Friday night. A showdown between the local clubs would have fallen into place had they survived round two.
Haywood County, which lost to both the Choctaws and Trojans during the year, pinned a 20-0 shutout on Dyer County in Newbern. Dyersburg dropped a 40-31 contest on the road against Memphis Mitchell.
Friday night’s win over Dyer County gives the Tomcats (10-2) the host slot against Mitchell (8-4) in next week’s third round action.
Both the Choctaws and Trojans complete the 2007 campaign with 10-2 records.
