JACKSON - Coming off a hard-fought, 21-14 win over Haywood County in double overtime the week before, things continued to go Dyersburg's way at Jackson North Side Friday night.
The Trojans took an early lead, made it comfortable and kept the host team scoreless until the final seconds of the game to post a 35-8 triumph.
Dyersburg scored five touchdowns to take the win, but DHS head coach Darren Bowling was equally pleased with the defensive effort.
"Our defense played great," Bowling said. "And the offense is coming around."
The Trojans, 3-0, will travel to Troy next Friday night for a Region 7-3A contest with Obion County Central.
Though Dyersburg spent a lot of the first quarter on the defensive, it soon became clear that nothing short of a large wooden horse would thwart the Trojan offense. After pushing North Side back to its own three-yard line late in the opening frame, Eric Cunningham crossed into the end zone for an easy touchdown and the lead.
The second quarter was highlighed by a pair of touchdowns by Rashad Taylor. The versatile Dyersburg senior tacked on two more scores in the third stanza as the Trojans padded the lead.
Though North Side pressed hard in the third quarter, the Indians were hampered by incomplete passes and a strong wind that threw off a punt attempt. The home team never managed to pass Dyersburg’s 40-yard line.
The Indians also helped the Dyersburg cause by fumbling the ball at their own eight. It was one of two fumbles North Side gave the Trojans, along with three interceptions.
Junior kicker Kyle Youmans was a perfect 5-for-5 for the Trojans on conversion kicks.
North Side’s only touchdown came after a 39-yard return on an intercepted pass with less than a minute left in the game. A two-point conversion wrapped up the scoring.
Though Bowling seemed upset at the last-second score from North Side, he was pleased with the result overall.
"We’ve still got a couple guys out with injury," he said, "so I think the rest of the team stepped up real well."
