Choctaws host annual First Look scrimmage

Six teams to gridiron for initial competition

NEWBERN - While taking a break from the heat during Wednesday's practice, Dyer County head coach Adam Renshaw and his staff continued to discuss strategy for Friday night's annual First Look Scrimmage.

Following plenty of hard work against athletes in matching uniforms, the brain trust should have no trouble getting their Choctaws prepared to pop pads with a team wearing a different color.

The host school will match up with Jackson North Side in the third of three skirmishes at Choctaw Stadium. After a busy few weeks of hot practice time, class schedules and thick playbooks, some head-to-head competition is a welcomed sight.

"Friday night's all about football," Renshaw said. "We're looking forward to it."

The First Look Scrimmage, sponsored by Sports Plus Rehab Centers and First Citizens National Bank, gives coaches, teams and fans a pre-season glance at some of the area squads while quenching everyone's thirst for football following the long off-season. It also helps the combatants get the feel for game-like situations before the season begins for real.

"We've been coming along and we're doing pretty good," Renshaw said. "But Friday night will really help us."

Activity at DCHS begins at 6 p.m. with a clash between the Dresden Lions and Halls Tigers. The second stage, set for 7 p.m., features the Brighton Cardinals and Haywood County Tomcats.

The Choctaws and Indians close out the action at 8 p.m.

Two of the schools participating in the First Look event will get in more scrimmage time on Aug. 17 when they take part in the 24th annual DHS Football Jamboree at J.C. Sawyers Stadium in Dyersburg.

Dresden, Halls, Brighton and Haywood County all open regular-season competition on Aug. 24. The Lions host Greenfield, the Tigers travel to Gibson County, the Cardinals entertain Memphis Frayser and the Tomcats play host to Jackson Central-Merry.

North Side and Dyer County won't begin the regular season until Aug. 31. The Indians open up by hosting Ripley while the Choctaws tee it up by welcoming Liberty to "Big Orange Country."
