‘Three-peat’ for Dyersburg girls

Lady Trojans claim third consecutive district championship

DYERSBURG - As she waited for the final players to complete the course, Dyersburg High School golf standout Allyson Agee didn’t have the look, confidence or temperament of a district champion.

Head down with a slight frown, she responded with a gloomy report when asked about her round at The Farms in the District 14 A-AA tournament on Monday.

"How’d I do? Not good," she sighed.

After taking a breath, Agee explained some of the low moments of the day that left her in such an ill mood - a two-stroke penalty for putting with the stick still in the hole, a triple bogey on No. 18 and an eight-over par score for the day.

Bad day? Not at all.

Agee carded an 80 for the event, low score of the tournament, and led the Lady Trojans to their third consecutive district championship. The round was just three strokes off her best effort of the season, a 77 on the same course, and 18 strokes better than the second-place finisher.

"This could have been my best round of the year, but I messed it up," Agee said. "I’d better play better at the region."

Emily Greer, Agee’s DHS teammate, also turned in a performance worthy of a medal. Greer, a senior member of the Lady Trojans, carded a round of 104, her best of the year, to help Dyersburg win the team title.

"I could have played a lot better," Greer said. "I’ve still got a lot of work to do."

Dyersburg won the team title with a round of 184. Milan was the runner-up team at 197, followed by Martin Westview (247) and Obion County Central (280).

Randy Coffman, Dyersburg’s golf coach, was thrilled with another district championship. According to coach, the Lady Trojans were determined to keep the district run alive.

"The girls have really been competitive," he said. "Allyson has a tremendous desire and that keeps the other girls working."

As for the three-peat, Coffman credited his team for a lot of hard work and concentration.

"It’s hard to do anything three times in a row."

The top three teams and top five individuals who were not a member of the advancing teams earn berths in regional competition.

Region 8 tournament play will be held Monday at the Tennessee River Golf Club in Decaturville.

Individuals to advance into regional play are Union City’s Katie Potter, with a round of 106, Humboldt’s Mary Coleman (109), Gleason’s Malorie James (113), Obion Central’s Hannah Chapell (114) and Meagan Eaves, of South Fulton (119).

Monday’s medalists, the top five overall individual scorers, include Agee (80), Milan standouts Nicole Chandler (98) and Lindsey Taylor (99), Greer (104) and Potter (106).
