HOLLOW ROCK-BRUCETON - Coming off a 24-7 loss to Dyer Co. last week 24-7, the Mustangs were hungry for a victory.

The Mustang faithful had something to cheer about as their Mustangs defeated Central 47-14 Friday night.

After dealing with the likes of Milan, ranked No. 2 in the latest AP poll, and defending Region 7-3A champ Dyer County, Huntingdon was looking for a confidence booster for the young Mustang team. It came at Herndon Stadium at the expense to Hollow-Bruceton Central. The Mustangs scored early and often to defeat the youthful Tigers.

The Mustangs posted 35 first-half points on Central, much like McKenzie did to the Tigers last week in a 42-0 victory.

Huntingdon left little doubt early, as Keenan Holder scored on the first play from scrimmage 64 yards to pay dirt. Holder finished with three scores, and other touchdown runs of 4 and 17. Later in the first half, Mustang Caleb Crocker scored twice with runs of 54 and 41 yards.

“We played with more intensity. We still got to work more on defense," said first-year Huntingdon coach Eric Swenson.

Huntingdon’s defense kept Central quarterback Chandler Jordan in check throughout the first half. Mustang Frank Villalobos recorded several tackles for Huntingdon. Mustang Jay Pierce capped off the first half with a 22-yard interception return for a touchdown. The Mustangs led 35-0 going to half.

In the second half, Huntingdon used several different combinations. They saw big contributions from Martez Hampton and Jess Dill both running backs. Several players saw valuable minutes for great game experience.

“That young group is going to be late bloomers," Swenson said. "There’s pretty good speed in that group. They’ve worked hard in practice. They’ll get better.”

Central’s bright spot came late with freshman backup quarterback Hayden Howell hitting Elijah Phillips 22 yards for the score. Ryan Ersenberger added a touchdown late, but it was not enough.

Central (0-3) plays host to South Fulton (3-0) next week. While the Mustangs (1-2) make long trip to Houston County (0-3) to take on the Fighting Irish. Kickoff for both games is set for 7:30 p.m.

“They’ve got some athletes. We expect we’ll get their best shot," Swenson said. "Hopefully we’ll go down there and win a ball game.”
