LEXINGTON - Coming off a tough loss last week to the Mckenzie Rebels at home the Eagles tried to rebound Thursday night. The Eagles had a stiff challenge at the hands of the Beaver Hornets. Many wondered how West Carroll would respond, but they prevailed late with a 28-16 thrilling win.
Beaver used multiple running backs early on with Chris Flannagan and Matthew Frazier with runs of 25 and 24. This set up 1-yard touchdown run. Frazier’s two-point conversion was good giving the Hornets an early 8-0 advantage. West Carroll then responded quickly with Jamal Glenn’s 48-yard touchdown run on their first play from scrimmage. The momentum may have shifted early in the game however. The Hornets seemed to be driving down with ease until West Carroll's Robert Reynolds stripped Frazier. Darwin Martinez recovered for the Eagles.
“We had too many turnovers and too many missed tackles," said Coach Dennis.”
West Carroll’s Glenn then went 63 yards to paydirt on the option up the left sideline. After an Eagle defensive stand, they went to the air. Quarterback Letrell Huff found Jacob Wynn for 26 yards. This set up Glenn’s 27-yard touchdown pass reception.
Beaver’s Flannagan tried to help his team get back in it with runs of 12, 7, and 5 yards. Flannagan would be a tall task throughout for the Eagle defense. After a completion to Colton Wulfert to the Eagle 8 yard line, West Carroll held on the double reverse right before half time.
“I thought we got a little flat there in the second quarter," said Coach Dennis.
After a West Carroll fumble to start the third quarter, Beaver drew closer with a play action pass to Wulfert for a 36-yard touchdown catch. This was as close as Beaver would get in this one as the Eagles ran some clock in the fourth quarter. West Carroll tacked on a touchdown late on a swing pass from Huff to Glenn to finish off the Hornets in a hard fought 28-16 victory.
