ATWOOD - Jamal Glenn rushed for 175 yards on 21 attempts and scored four touchdowns to give the West carroll's Junior War Eagles a 34-24 victory over Bruceton on homecoming.

Although the West Carroll defense had another great game, they couldn’t manage to contain Bruceton running back Trezden Tharpe as he finished the game with 103 yards on 18 carries and scored two touchdowns. Tharpe’s ability to dodge and slip defenders kept the Tigers in the game early as the teams were tied 16-16 with 1:33 remaining in the half.

West Carroll quarterback Letrell Huff got the War Eagles into scoring position quickly on the ensuing drive as he connected with Jacob Wynn down the left sideline for a 55-yard pass, setting up a first and goal at the Tigers 5 yard line. Following a tough run by Darwin Martinez that got the ball down to the 1 yard line, Huff called his own number and punched it in for the score with :16.0 remaining in the half. The War Eagles led 22-16 lead.

Following a defensive struggle for most of the third quarter, the War Eagles found paydirt with :30.9 remaining in the quarter on a 24-yard run by Glenn.

Glenn’s 38-yard score with :44.1 remaining in the fourth quarter preserved the War Eagles a 34-16 victory.

Although Bruceton’s Tharpe ran the ensuing kickoff back for a 68-yard touchdown for the final score of the night, the War Eagles held on for the 34-24 victory in front of a homecoming crowd.

The coaching staff wasn’t completely pleased with the game, but with all the distractions of homecoming week, they are just happy to come away with a win.

“That team (Bruceton) isn’t bad; their record is 1-5," said West Carroll coach Wade Maddox. "But they’ve lost to Gleason by four points and they’ve been close in most games they’ve played. They are a very solid football team and they shouldn’t be taken lightly.”

“Our backs ran hard tonight and our defense made key stops when it was crucial," Maddox said. "We didn’t execute as well as we would have liked, but we managed to play through the adversity for the homecoming victory.”

Jamal Glenn, West Carroll’s version of the human highlight reel, needs a mere 81 yards to surpass the 1,000 yard mark this season as he has complied 919 rushing yards on 103 carries, scoring 13 touchdowns along the way. Glenn has also accounted for 88 yards receiving on five catches and scored two touchdowns. The War Eagles (5-1) will travel to Huntingdon on October 2 to take on the Mustangs. The game will be played at Huntingdon’s Paul Ward Stadium, located on the Huntingdon High School campus. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
