Bethel claims national soccer title

Defeats Rio Grande (Ohio) 2-1 in overtime

FRESNO, Calif. - Mario Vila Boa's goal 15 seconds into the sudden-death overtime period propelled Bethel College to the NAIA national soccer championship here Saturday night.

It was Bethel's first national title in school history as the Wildcats edged Rio Grande (Ohio) 2-1. The Wildcats complete the season on a 13-game win streak.

After battling to a scoreless draw, the Red Storm took a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute. Jason Massie spotted Ederson Lopes, looped a pass which Lopes headed in. Bethel's Armando Orozco launched a pass in the direction of Erick Rosas and Rosas headed in the equalizer during the 73rd minute.

The two teams remained tied at 1 going into extra time.

Just seconds into the sudden-death period, Vila Boa booted the game-winner.

Bethel had 16 shots to Rio Grande's 17. Felix Obilo and Vila Boa each led Bethel with four shots. Paul Nicholson led the Red Storm with three shots, four others had two shots.

The Wildcats end the season 17-5-2. Rio Grande finishes at 19-3-1. Approximately 60 BC fans watched the game via closed-circuit television on campus.
