MARTIN, Tenn. – Gibson County knew it would take a team effort to notch its first District 13-AA win, and that’s exactly what it got Tuesday night at Westview.
Six players scored in double digits, led by Tony Eskew’s 19, as the Pioneers erased the memories of an early season 71-56 home-court loss with a 77-71 victory over the Chargers.
In a see-saw battle that had 14 lead changes, Gibson County showed its hunger for its first district victory in the final three minutes of the contest, scoring 10 straight points to put the game out of reach for Westview (7-10, 2-7).
The Pioneers are now 1-9 in district fare and 6-12 overall, thanks in large part to Eskew’s 19, as well as 12 points each from Denzell Harris, Marc Roach and Mike Horton.
Dillon Gardner led the Chargers with 18 points, while Jacob Lloyd and Will Thompson added 16 and 14, respectively.
Westview and Gibson County return to action Friday night with the Chargers traveling to Dyersburg and the Pioneers entertaining Ripley. Both games follow girls’ game openers, which are slated to tip off at 6:30.
