UTM's Weatherly named OVC Newcomer for record 6th time

MARTIN, Tenn. – Junior forward Alecia Weatherly, from The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team, has been named the Ohio Valley Conference’s Newcomer of the Week for a record sixth time. Weatherly’s sixth weekly newcomer accolade matches the record of former Skyhawk Nicole Lockridge who earned the same honor six times during the 1997-98 season.

Weatherly’s latest and second consecutive newcomer of the week comes after she played all 40 minutes against Southeast Missouri Thursday night, despite suffering an injury with two minutes remaining that would force her to miss UT Martin’s Saturday game at Eastern Illinois.

Against Southeast Missouri Weatherly scored 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds to help UT Martin pick up its first win at the Show Me Center since 2001. Weatherly also dished out a pair of assists, made a steal while also picking up a block in the win. Her 10 points also marked the 11th time she has registered a double-figure scoring effort in her first year of competitive basketball since her senior year of high school in 2006.

Weatherly and her Skyhawk teammates will return to the court Monday night when they play at SIU Edwardsville’s Vadalabene Center for the first time since 1992. UT Martin leads the all-time series with SIU Edwardsville 6-2 and will look to replicate last year’s 73-70 win at Skyhawk Arena.
