Westview advances to state semifinals

MURFREESBORO, Tenn – Grace Ann Swaim scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and Amber Rechis poured in 17 points, to lead the Westview Lady Chargers to a 57-47 win over Lewis County in the quarterfinals of the TSSAA Tournament.
After an early onslaught, an adjustment in Lewis County’s defensive scheme in the second half held Swaim and Rechis to six and four points, respectively, while Breanna Pitcher stepped up her game to tally 10 points and seven rebounds.
Westview (27-8) will play at 2:30, tomorrow afternoon, against the winner of today’s later matchup between McMinn Central (30-2) and Greeneville (25-8).
The Lady Chargers jumped out to a 14-4 advantage at the end of the first period and held a 33-21 lead at the half.
However, the Lady Panthers (27-7) outscored Westview 11-5 in the third period and cut their deficit to four points on a Jessica Hinson basket on the first shot of the final frame.
Westview’s lead was still by just four points at the 4:35 mark when a jumper by Rechis started an 11-3 late-period run and put the Lady Chargers on top 53-41 with 1:46 remaining. From there, Westview was able to salt away the victory and advance to the semifinals.
After a hot start that saw Westview shoot 57.1 percent (12-21) from the field in the first half, the Lady Chargers hit 33.3 percent (8-24) in the second half to finish with 44.4 percent for the game. Westview totaled 6-16 (37.5) shooting 3-pointers and 11-13 (84.6) from the free-throw line.
Pitcher was perfect on the day with 3-3 field goals, including two 3-pointers, and 2-2 free throws.
Lewis County, led by Hinson’s 11 points, shot 38.6 percent (17-44) from the field, 25 percent (4-16) from 3-point range and 81.8 percent (9-11) from the charity stripe.
