MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Gibson County's Heather Butler had almost as many points all by herself as did the Christ Presbyterian Academy team had, collectively.
The 33-1 defending-champion Lady Pioneers smoked CPA 55-35 in the Class AA girls' state basketball quarterfinals Wednesday. The action took place at Monte Hale Arena on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University.
Butler deposited 33 points, was 9-19 from the floor, hit three triples and was a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line. She had 20 of her 33 points at halftime.
CPA stayed with Gibson County for three quarters. CPA cut the lead to four late in the second half, 35-31, and trailed 39-31 after three.
As the fourth began, GC began to separate itself from CPA. It ran to the end with a 16-4 flurry to claim victory.
Heather Griffin had 12 points and nine rebounds for Gibson County. Aubrey Reedy had seven points and six boards. Gibson County was 17-19 from the free throw line.
Hannah Thurley topped CPA with 10 points, Lauren Thompson scored eight and Meredith Romans had seven.
CPA falls to 32-5. Gibson County will face South Greene, 25-6, in the Class AA semifinals 1 p.m. Friday. South Greene defeated Polk county 73-53 in quarterfinal action Wedensdsay afternoon.
