Dyersburg didn’t get what it wanted out of a recent trip to Jackson, but the Lady Trojans didn’t allow host Liberty the satisfaction of a victory by battling to a 1-1 tie.
"Well it wasn't a win, but we didn't lose," Dyersburg head coach Lance Roy reported.
The tie leaves the Lady Trojans with a 1-0-1 slate.
Roy hopes his club can have more success tonight when it entertains rival Martin-Westview.
"They’re our biggest rival," Roy said.
Tonight’s contest begins at 6 at Dyersburg Middle School.
According to the coach, the meeting with Liberty was a game of missed opportunities.
Both squads battled evenly through the first half and were knotted in a scoreless tie at the break.
The Lady Trojans scored early in the second half when freshman Emma Caylor received a ball that was lobbed over the defense. She out ran the opposition, made it a one-on-one situation with the Liberty goalie and scored from about 10 feet in front of the goal with a shot into the lower right corner of the net.
Dyersburg remained in control until the late going. With play into the final minute, the Lady Crusaders scored off a scored off a deflection from one of the Lady Trojan midfielders.
"We played our sloppiest game of the season on offense," Roy said. "We had plenty of shots, but we just couldn't put the ball in the net."
It wasn’t a win, but Roy was pleased with the effort.
"We are proud of the way the girls played . . ., but there is a lot that we need to work on before we play Martin."
After tonight’s contest with rival Westview, DHS travels to Trenton on Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
