Title match set for Sunday

Dyersburg, Westview to clash for District 14-AA crown

DYERSBURG - With the top two teams in District 14-AA set for the tournament title contest, a rare Sunday afternoon match somehow seems appropriate.

Dyersburg and Martin Westview, a pair of rural West Tennessee's perennial soccer standouts, were set to settle the championship Thursday night when severe storms forced the match to be postponed. The championship clash has been rescheduled for Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at Dyersburg Middle School.

Terry Glover, athletic director at Dyersburg High School, announced the new date Friday.

"As long as it doesn't interfere with anybody's church, it's fine with me," DHS mentor Lance Roy said Friday afternoon. "We're looking forward to it."

A Monday evening time had been discussed, but that would have forced the 14-AA teams to return to the field the following night to begin Region 7 competition.

"The Sunday afternoon time will give us some rest before we begin the regional tournament," Roy added. "That'll be better."

The district tournament winner hosts the opposite district's runner-up squad in the first round of region competition, set to begin Tuesday night.

According to Roy, Jackson Christian School and University School of Jackson were in the late going of the District 13 title game when Thursday night's storms forced it to a halt. The two teams were scheduled to return to the field today to complete the final six minutes of a 2-2 deadlock.

In regular-season action, Dyersburg topped Westview 5-0 in a match at DMS. The Lady Trojans and Lady Chargers battled to a 2-2 tie in the rematch at Martin.
